Columbia Peak is located in the Monte Cristo group of peaks around the old mining town of Monte Cristo. From the summit one has a commanding view of Kyes Peak and Glacier Peak to the east, Sloan Peak to the north, Rainier to the south, and west to Three Fingers. To get there, drive the Mountain Loop Highway from the town of Granite Falls to Barlow Pass. Hike the old roadway (closed to vehicles) to the trailhead for Poodle Dog Pass at the Monte Cristo town site. From Poodle Dog Pass follow the trail to Twin Lakes and find campsites here. From the lake hike north to the top of the ridge and locate the climber's path that heads up toward Columbia Peak. The summit climb is mostly class 3 rock, but involves some class 4 with exposure.
